Recife, Brazil
Recife, the vibrant capital of Brazil’s northeastern state of Pernambuco, is a city where rich cultural heritage meets dynamic modern life. Known as the “Venice of Brazil” for its intricate network of rivers, bridges, and islands, Recife blends colonial charm with an energetic artistic and creative scene. The city is steeped in history, evident in its baroque churches, colorful 17th-century buildings, and the well-preserved architecture of the old town, Recife Antigo. As a cultural hub, Recife is home to one of the most famous carnivals in Brazil, featuring the infectious rhythms of frevo and maracatu, which reflect the city’s deep Afro-Brazilian influences. Its coastal setting, with stunning beaches like Boa Viagem, adds to the city’s allure, making it an inspiring place for artists and storytellers alike.
Beyond its historical and cultural wealth, Recife is also a thriving center for innovation and storytelling. The city has a strong literary and cinematic tradition, with institutions like the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation and Porto Digital fostering creative industries. It has served as the backdrop for many renowned Brazilian films and series, with its mix of urban energy and tropical beauty providing endless visual and narrative inspiration. For the Pop Up Residency, Recife offers an immersive environment where tradition and contemporary creativity intersect, allowing participants to engage with the city’s artistic pulse while developing their projects in a unique and dynamic setting.
